Summary
A modern architectural production in Colares, Sintra, Portugal (1940–1974) reflects a unique blend of international and local influences, challenging traditional oppositions between city/countryside, natural/artificial, and otium/negotium. This study reveals an unprecedented collection of vacation and weekend houses, distinguished by their architectural interest and the professionals behind them. By analyzing these structures through the lens of James Ackerman's (1995) villa concept, the research uncovers how modern ideologies were materialized in a secular landscape, offering new insights into the evolution of Portuguese cultural landscapes. The approach combines conceptual analysis with spatial and historical examination to highlight the interplay between poetic idealization and practical architectural innovation.
