Summary
A comparative analysis of the panther's symbolic representation in medieval texts reveals its evolution from bestiaries to the late-fourteenth or early-fifteenth century Portuguese work Orto do Esposo. The study identifies Bartholomew the Englishman’s De proprietatibus rerum (1240 AD) as a key intermediary, bridging the gap between earlier bestiary traditions and later literary depictions. By transcribing and translating passages from an Alcobaça Monastery manuscript (Alc. 383), this research clarifies how the panther’s imagery shifts across these works, contributing to ongoing PhD research on medieval symbolism.
