Summary
A novel approach combining joint resealing with Fabric Reinforced Cementitious Matrix (FRCM) systems significantly enhanced the bending and shear capacity of masonry structures, as demonstrated at the Abbazia di San Paolo Fuori le Mura in Rome. The study found that applying PBO fiber-based FRCM on both surfaces of walls, alongside mortar joint resealing, improved seismic retrofitting outcomes. Penetration tests confirmed that the new mortar's compressive strength surpassed that of original mortars, offering a robust solution for high-seismicity areas like Palazzo Arnone. This method provides an effective strategy for strengthening historic masonry structures while ensuring structural resilience.
