Panama migration damage will be difficult to address

World Heritage Site: Darien National Park

Publication Year: 2024

Publication Type: Report

Publication Identifier: WHE0342BEFA29

Summary

Over one million migrants traversing the Darien National Park since 2021 have accelerated deforestation, environmental degradation, and pollution, posing severe threats to biodiversity and local communities. Enhanced connectivity for migration control risks exacerbating illegal logging and mining, while increased human activity may disrupt animal behavior and food chains. Despite migrant flights to northern countries like Nicaragua gaining traction, they are unlikely to replace the Darien route, leaving long-term ecological and cultural impacts challenging to mitigate.
