Summary
New evidence from archival photographs and graphic materials reveals that the central altar apse of the Church of the Dormition in Melyotovo (1461–1462), a key monument of the Pskov School of Architecture, originally featured a stone arcature similar to that of the Church of Saints Cosmas and Damian in Pskov. This decorative element was later covered with plaster in the 19th century and removed during restoration without reconstruction, leading to its near-forgotten state. The rediscovery challenges existing perceptions of the earliest surviving example of Pskov architectural style, offering fresh insights into its design evolution.
