Summary
This research reveals that indigenous populations played a pivotal role in shaping social dynamics within Jesuit missions in the colonial Amazon, particularly in regions now part of the Brazilian Amazon. By analyzing Samuel Fritz's Diary (1686–1725) alongside records from the Archivo de Indias in Seville, the study offers new interpretations of indigenous agency during the 17th and 18th centuries. The findings challenge traditional narratives by emphasizing indigenous contributions to mission life under Spanish colonial influence.
