Summary

Water quality in the alluvial marshes of Al-Khaweze, southeastern Iraq, has deteriorated significantly due to increased precipitation and river flow, leading to elevated levels of turbidity, pH, dissolved oxygen, and total dissolved solids beyond permissible limits. This degradation is linked to environmental changes observed in 2018 and 2019, which affected the region's hydrochemical balance. The study analyzed three sections of the marshes, revealing widespread exceedances that pose risks to biodiversity and the UNESCO-listed Mesopotamian landscape.
