Summary

Recent excavations at Gamla Skogsby, Öland, Sweden, have uncovered well-preserved Iron Age house foundations and artefacts, providing unprecedented insights into mid-Iron Age society during the Migration Period. These findings, conducted by Linnaeus University since 2019, complement evidence from Sandby borg—a nearby site linked to a fifth-century AD massacre—revealing the use of violence as a political tool in Scandinavia. The excavation yielded a wealth of animal bones, pottery, and other artefacts, enriching our understanding of this turbulent era.
