Summary

Babylon Governorate, Iraq, is projected to face significant solid waste challenges by 2030, with annual waste outputs expected to reach between 761,104 and 943,055 tons. This represents a substantial increase from the current 483,221 tons annually. The study used two population growth methods to estimate future waste quantities, revealing that cumulative waste could total up to 14 million tons by 2030 if current trends persist. Current waste management practices in Babylon rely on open dumping and inefficient collection, failing to meet environmental standards for landfill sites. The research highlights the urgent need for sustainable waste management strategies to address growing waste volumes while protecting the region's ecological integrity.
