Summary

A reactive monitoring mission by UNESCO and IUCN identified the Maitree Super Thermal Power Plant, proposed near the Sundarbans, as a significant threat to the world's largest unbroken mangrove system. The study highlighted four key concerns: air pollution from coal ash, wastewater and waste ash pollution, increased shipping and dredging activities, and cumulative impacts of industrial development infrastructure. The mission recommended cancelling and relocating the power plant project due to its potential adverse effects on the Sundarbans's outstanding universal value.
