Summary

A successful memorandum of agreement designating Prambanan Temple and Borobudur Temple as official places of worship for Hindus and Buddhists was achieved through a strategic process of tarka vāda (negotiation), despite initial challenges. The key to this outcome was the synchronization of interests among multiple stakeholders, including the Directorate General of Culture, Hindu and Buddhist community guidance agencies, and economic beneficiaries such as tourist parks, the Ministry of Tourism, and regional governments. The research, conducted using autoethnography and literature review, highlights the role of the Assistant Deputy for Religious Moderation in facilitating these negotiations, underscoring the importance of moderated collaboration in resolving complex inter-agency conflicts to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes.
