Summary
Göbekli Tepe, the world's oldest known place of worship, has undergone significant changes since its discovery, transforming from a local site into a globally recognized tourist destination. This shift has alienated the local population, severing their deep-rooted connection to the site and threatening the continuity of their ancestral beliefs, rituals, and cultural heritage. The study reveals that while Göbekli Tepe's reimagining as a commercialized tourist attraction has drawn visitors from around the world, it has simultaneously marginalized the region's inhabitants, turning them into 'others' in their own land. Through qualitative research involving interviews with 20 participants from six villages near Göbekli Tepe, the study highlights the social and spatial disconnection experienced by locals, who now view the site as a foreign space dominated by tourism rather than a meaningful cultural landmark.
