Summary
A novel method using Sentinel-2 satellite imagery successfully estimated intertidal topography and exposure periods in the Bijagós Archipelago, Guinea-Bissau, with high accuracy. The study introduced a four-parameter logistic regression to model intertidal topography and developed a technique to correct for tidal-stage lags, addressing geographical biases caused by water height variations within each image. This approach closely matched official tide-stage data and demonstrated strong correlation with in-situ exposure period measurements. The findings underscore the potential of remote sensing to provide large-scale, high-resolution digital elevation models (DEMs) and tidal data, offering critical insights for coastal safety, ecology, and biodiversity conservation efforts.
