Summary

Authentic souvenirs in Luang Prabang, Laos, are deeply tied to local craftsmanship and cultural identity, according to suppliers who prioritize historical representation over mass-produced alternatives. A study of 24 key suppliers—including producers, vendors, retailers, and middlemen—revealed that authenticity is perceived as essential for preserving place identity and enhancing tourism’s image in Laos. While economic, symbolic, and artisan values drive demand for locally made handicrafts, suppliers face challenges such as limited access to raw materials. The research highlights a divide: smaller vendors, often constrained by financial resources, are more likely to sell imported or mass-produced items. Conducted through qualitative interviews and participant observation in 2017, the study offers new insights into souvenir authenticity from a supplier-centric perspective, providing actionable guidance for tourism stakeholders to sustain authentic craft traditions.
