Summary

Traditional 'Sabat' spaces in Mediterranean cities, such as Algiers' Casbah, demonstrate significant potential for generating transient thermal aeraulic conditions that can mitigate prolonged heat exposure and enhance pedestrian comfort. Research findings indicate that Sabat spaces, characterized by shade and strategic wind channeling, create distinct microclimates with lower air temperatures, mean radiant temperatures, and relative humidity compared to non-covered areas. Wind speed variations were particularly pronounced, highlighting the importance of spatial transitions in abrupt thermal changes. These insights, derived from a novel 'thermal walk' method combining dynamic pedestrian sensations with mobile micrometeorological measurements, contribute to understanding traditional sustainable urban devices like Sabat. The study, conducted during warm winter conditions, underscores their role in fostering restorative walking experiences and offers valuable implications for climate-resilient urban design.
