Summary
Over half of Arequipa's monumental zone, Peru, comprises republican-era buildings, with 500 domestic structures (casonas) showcasing neoclassical, neorrenessance, and eclectic styles. However, only 240 are protected, leaving the remaining 50% vulnerable to deterioration or alteration. This study reveals that three emblematic casonas—housing institutions like the Alianza Francesa de Arequipa—retain over 50% of their original fabric, despite structural additions reaching up to 30%. Spatial analysis highlights a reduction in open space to as low as 20% of the lot. Neoclassical design predominates stylistically, while construction techniques include ignimbrite masonry with cajón walls and both barrel-vaulted and flat roofs with iron rails. These findings underscore the need for preservation efforts amid adaptive reuse challenges.
