Summary
Rwanda, despite its small size and complex history, supports a remarkably diverse mammal fauna. A comprehensive checklist identifies 205 species within four key areas: Parc National des Volcans, Akagera National Park, Nyungwe National Park, and the eastern shore of Lake Kivu—covering nearly all known mammals in the country. While some records may require verification or future surveys, this study provides a critical baseline for Rwanda's mammalian biodiversity, including rare species like the mountain gorilla and golden monkey, which are significant to conservation efforts, particularly in UNESCO-listed Nyungwe National Park.
