Summary

British youth on holiday in Ibiza engage in binge drinking, drug use, and other risk behaviors not only to escape societal constraints but also because these actions help construct their identities. This ethnographic study, using focus groups and observations with 97 participants aged 17–31, reveals that such behaviors are integral to their life narratives and are further encouraged by the social context of Ibiza. Unlike previous survey-based research, this study provides a deeper understanding of the social meaning and contextual factors behind these behaviors.
