Turkestan as a center of religious and cultural tourism: an analysis of the current state and development prospects

Turkestan, home to the UNESCO-listed Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, is poised to emerge as a leading tourism hub in Central Asia. A recent analysis highlights its untapped potential for religious and cultural tourism, driven by global interest in pilgrimage and heritage sites. The study identifies key strategies—such as developing new tourist routes, integrating modern technologies for visitor management, and preserving historical landmarks—that could overcome current infrastructure barriers. With targeted government investments and a comprehensive approach, Turkestan can strengthen its international standing while safeguarding its rich cultural heritage.
