Summary

Tokunoshima dialect, spoken on Tokunoshima Island in the Northern Ryukyus, exhibits unique linguistic features that distinguish it from other Amami languages. Despite lacking comparative studies on its genetic relationships, Uemura's (1972) typological classification places Tokunoshima within the Oshima-Tokunoshima group, alongside nearby islands like Amami Oshima and Kakeromajima. The study focuses on three villages in Isen Town—Higashihama, Kenbuku, and Uemonawa—revealing distinct dialectal variations across dozens of villages on the island. While Nakamoto (1990) proposed a broader 'Amami dialect' classification, Tokunoshima's linguistic diversity remains understudied, highlighting gaps in regional comparative linguistics.
