Summary
Researchers have identified two new critically endangered species of Hippeastrum, a genus renowned for its vibrant flowers, within the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. These microendemic species are distinguished by unique floral characteristics and are found in single known locations with small population sizes, highlighting their precarious conservation status. The study employed morphological descriptions from herbarium specimens, cultivated plants, and in situ observations to differentiate these new species from related taxa. An identification key for Brazilian Atlantic Forest Hippeastrum species was also provided, along with ecological data and photographs. The findings underscore the urgent need for further systematic sampling across the region and emphasize the role of specialist taxonomists in preserving biodiversity in one of the world's most significant hotspots.
