Summary
A study on the Historic Centre of San Gimignano reveals that while tourism can enhance cultural heritage protection, it also poses significant environmental and structural challenges. The research introduces a low-carbon economy-based early warning system to monitor and simulate tourism's impact on the site's carrying capacity. Findings indicate that despite high forest coverage (>80%) and excellent air quality, economic and environmental indicators show an alarming annual increase of 102%, while social and environmental indices exhibit a mild decline. This system aims to actively mitigate risks by predicting future tourism pressures, ensuring sustainable preservation for fragile heritage sites.
