Summary
Late medieval Warsaw (1420s–1520s) experienced a significant shift from harmonious coexistence to growing hostility between its Jewish and Christian communities. Initially, economic cooperation thrived under the protection of local dukes, with Jews actively participating in court sessions and using Polish, German, and Hebrew for bureaucratic and social interactions. However, mid-15th century political, economic, and religious changes fueled competition perceptions, leading to increasing hostility from Warsaw burghers toward Jews. The study analyzes Jewish property ownership, economic ties, and legal records—including noble court sessions—to trace these evolving dynamics, revealing a pivotal transition in interfaith relations.
