Summary
Research on the Episcopal Complex of the Euphrasian Basilica in Poreč, Istria, has identified a previously unrecognized stone-carving workshop operating at the dawn of the 9th century. This workshop, characterized by its high-quality craftsmanship, produced intricate liturgical furnishings for churches in Pula and neighboring bishoprics. The study focuses on Istrian examples of pre-Romanesque plutei (liturgical benches) adorned with a distinctive variant of centric compositional schemes featuring diagonal axes and circular loops at the ends. By analyzing morphological and executionary traits of these fragments and linking them to other sculptural elements from the same sites, the research suggests that this workshop was a hub for artistic exchange between Istrian and Venetian carvers, reflecting broader pre-Romanesque artistic movements in the region.
