Summary
Three previously unknown manuscripts of classical authors, including the oldest extant fragments of Sextus Empiricus and Cleomedes from the 10th century, have been discovered in Mount Athos' libraries. Additionally, a hitherto overlooked 13th-century manuscript of Homer's Iliad was identified in the Lavra library. These findings significantly expand the known corpus of ancient texts preserved on Mount Athos, with two fragments from Vatopedi dating back to the 10th century and representing the earliest witnesses for their respective authors. The study highlights the importance of Mount Athos as a repository of classical manuscripts, contributing valuable insights into the transmission of ancient literature.
