Summary

A grammar-based methodology has been developed to support the adaptive reuse of historic 'Sobrado' buildings, a key architectural type found in São Luís's 18th- and 19th-century urban ensemble. This approach focuses on analyzing floor plans to document and understand the original configuration of buildings, preserving historically relevant elements while enabling their functional adaptation. The methodology was applied to a case study building, aiming to identify specific placements of elements to deepen understanding for future conservation efforts. By leveraging shape grammar, this study offers a systematic way to balance preservation with adaptive reuse in UNESCO-listed historic centers.
