Summary

Researchers have identified eight key diagnostic events of dinoflagellate cyst taxa from the Península Valdés, Argentina, providing the first detailed biostratigraphic framework for the region. These events allowed the subdivision of sedimentary successions into Early to Middle Miocene and Late Miocene periods, offering new insights into the paleoenvironmental conditions of the area during this time. The study analyzed samples from the upper part (60–585 m) of the YPF.Ch. PV. es-1 borehole, focusing on taxa such as Spiniferites/Achomosphaera spp., Reticulatosphaera actinocoronata, and others. Comparisons with Northern Hemisphere dinoflagellate cyst records revealed a strong similarity, except for Hystrichokolpoma rigaudiae, which may indicate local paleoenvironmental variations.
