Summary
A nonlinear relationship between seismic velocity changes and volcanic deformation was identified at Piton de la Fournaise, with velocity decreases during inflation (2000–2007) and increases during deflation post-eruption. Researchers analyzed 13 years of seismic data from 30+ stations, measuring cross-correlation travel time delays to track velocity changes sensitive to depths of 100–2500 meters. These findings were compared with GPS-derived deformation data, revealing a two-order-of-magnitude discrepancy between the two metrics, suggesting complex interactions in volcanic dynamics.
