Summary

Peru protects approximately 23.4% of its Amazon biome, totaling over 18.1 million hectares, through various categories of protected areas. However, only about 44.7% of this land is fully protected (indirect-use), with the remaining 55.3% allowing human presence and restricted economic activities (direct-use). This study highlights the complexity of managing human impact in these protected regions, where national parks, reserves, and sanctuaries coexist with areas permitting limited human activity, such as communal reserves and protection forests.
