Basin-Scale Assessment for CO2 Storage Prospectivity in the Province of Québec, Canada

Summary

A basin-scale assessment identifies the St. Lawrence Lowlands sub-basin as the most promising for CO2 storage in Québec, Canada, due to its excellent reservoir-seal pairs and proximity to large CO2 emitters. The study evaluates four Paleozoic sedimentary basins, finding that while the Anticosti sub-basin and Magdalen basins show geological potential, their offshore locations and limited infrastructure hinder their viability. Conversely, the Appalachian and Gaspé Belt basins exhibit very low prospectivity, except for the northeastern part of the Gaspé Peninsula. This assessment combines geological data with emissions analysis to prioritize regions for future CO2 storage development.
