Summary
A 30-year remote sensing study of Xochimilco Lake, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Ramsar Wetland, reveals significant changes in vegetation cover and water extent between 1987 and 2016. Using normalized indices (NDVI, NDWI, MNDWI) derived from Landsat satellite data, researchers classified five land-cover types—water, water with vegetation, dry vegetation, watered vegetation, and other materials—with 89% reliability. The findings highlight the environmental challenges facing this internationally recognized conservation area, despite its protected status.
