Summary

Acheulean tool assemblages from Namib IV, a rare fossil fauna-bearing pan system in Namibia's Sand Sea, confirm the site's significance as one of few Earlier Stone Age sites in the region. This first archaeological revisit since 1978 validates Myra Shackley's original findings while raising new questions about hominin landscape use and environmental conditions during the Acheulean period. Researchers analyzed surface-exposed artifacts and large cutting tools (LCTs), comparing them to Shackley's collection, demonstrating its representativeness and highlighting gaps in historical data.
