The cathedral, classified as a Monument historique since 1862 and part of the Grande-Île World Heritage Site, underwent extensive state-led conservation efforts over the past 100 years. This comprehensive study, commissioned by the Alsace Regional Directorate for Cultural Affairs, provides detailed insights into the challenges, methodologies, and outcomes of preserving such an iconic structure. The work highlights the interplay between historical preservation, architectural innovation, and adaptive reuse, offering a model for the conservation of similarly complex heritage sites worldwide.
