Long-term dynamics of Lake Baikal pelagic phytoplankton under climate change

World Heritage Site: Lake Baikal

Publication Year: 2011

Publication Type: Article

Publication Identifier: WHE16B60F51D4

Summary

Climate change is reshaping Lake Baikal's pelagic phytoplankton communities, with small-cell algae thriving during summer stratification while endemic large-cell species decline. Analyzing a 50-year dataset (1951–2000), researchers linked rising water temperatures in the photic layer and increased chlorophyll a concentrations to shifts in plankton dynamics. Endemic algae, historically dominant under ice cover, show negative trends, suggesting climate-driven changes may threaten this unique ecosystem. The study combines long-term observational data with ecological insights to highlight the vulnerability of Lake Baikal's biodiversity.
