Summary
Restoration practices during the 18th–19th centuries, particularly concerning the Trinity Gate Church of Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, involved a shift from mere repainting to a more nuanced approach influenced by European conservation theories. The study reveals that while early restoration efforts were driven by aesthetic preferences and ideological considerations, they also marked the beginning of a theoretical framework for preserving historical artifacts. Notably, these practices led to the destruction of original exterior decorations (frescoes and stucco) during 1881–1883 restoration works, highlighting the unintended consequences of evolving conservation ideologies.
