Summary

A recent analysis of the epistolary correspondence (Carteggio) of Abbot Gomes Eanes from the Monastery of Saint Mary of Florence sheds light on the challenges and complexities surrounding a failed attempt to introduce Benedictine observance in Portugal during the late Middle Ages. The study reveals that this project, supported by Portuguese kings João I and Duarte, was hindered by tense relations between the monarchy and the Church, as well as resistance from various stakeholders. It highlights the diverse perspectives on religious reform among key figures, including the abbots of Florence and Alcobaça, and the archbishop of Braga. The research contributes to broader discussions on religious renewal in late medieval Europe, emphasizing the role of personal networks, circulation of texts, and forms of resistance to such movements.
