Summary

Research on the mortars used in Quito's colonial churches reveals distinct construction techniques and material preferences based on religious order. The study analyzed 48 mortar samples from the Company of Jesus, Santo Domingo, and San Francisco churches, finding that the Jesuits primarily used lime and gypsum mixtures, while the Dominicans and Franciscans favored volcanic aggregate-based mortars. These findings validate historical datations and suggest a fusion of European and local construction techniques. The research employed non-destructive testing methods, including X-ray diffraction and microscopy, to systematically analyze samples without damaging the structures. This study contributes to understanding the chronological development of Quito's churches and proposes guidelines for future restoration efforts, ensuring compatibility with historical materials.
