Summary
Cities shaped by universities can be characterized by a set of distinctive traits—transversality, interdisciplinarity, pluralism, creativity, inclusivity, and openness—that define their identity. This doctoral thesis identifies Salamanca (Spain) as a model university city where the integration of university projects with local development has solidified these attributes, contrasting it with Campinas (Brazil). Through conceptual historical analysis and comparative modeling, the study demonstrates that such traits are most evident when universities align with territorial and community interests, reinforcing the city’s identity. The research highlights how public policies and collaborative actions can foster this dynamic, offering a framework for understanding university-city relationships during the 19th to 20th century transition.
