Summary
Archaeological research on the Complex of Koguryo Tombs reveals that structures with tiled roofs, specifically using chakgo-tile (착고와), were built atop Goguryeo tombs from approximately the 3rd to 5th centuries. This discovery challenges previous assumptions about the absence of such structures and provides evidence for a shift in Goguryeo's tomb system, where the focus on ancestral consciousness moved from ground-level monuments to internal tomb features by the 6th century. The study analyzed chakgo-tiles excavated from notable tombs like Jeokseokchong (적석총), Usanha (우산하), Seodaechong (서대총), and Cheonchuchong (천추총) to infer architectural practices and historical changes, offering new insights into Goguryeo's burial customs and societal evolution.
