Summary

Pezinok's medieval significance as both a strategic settlement and an ecclesiastical center was shaped by its association with the Hont-Poznan noble family, which elevated its status beyond mere military or economic importance. The study reveals that Pezinok’s parish church, the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, became a pivotal religious hub due to this magnate influence, distinguishing it within the Bratislava Provostry. Archaeological evidence suggests the presence of an earlier sacral building dating back to Great Moravian times, which persisted through significant architectural changes in the 14th century. The settlement’s transformation from a Slavic market and toll center to a German-settled urban agglomeration by the 15th century underscores its dual role as both a fortified garrison and a cultural landmark. This research highlights the interplay between noble patronage, ecclesiastical development, and urban evolution in medieval Central Europe.
