Summary
A collaborative approach to preserving and enhancing the historic significance of UNESCO World Heritage Sites is demonstrated through the transformation process of Rua da Sofia, part of the University of Coimbra – Alta e Sofia. This study emphasizes the importance of inclusive, transparent, and citizen-informed decision-making in shaping the future of such culturally significant urban spaces. By focusing on participatory principles rather than specific design solutions, it provides a framework for engaging stakeholders effectively. The research complements a practical guide aimed at collective urban planning, offering insights that can be applied to other World Heritage Sites facing similar challenges.
