Summary

A study on the Putorana Plateau reveals that early diagenesis in Arctic glacial lakes leads to significant geochemical changes, including the reduction of iron and manganese oxides and their migration into pore water. The research analyzed sediment cores from Lakes Pyasino and Melkoye, showing a shift from oxidized to reduced conditions at ~10 cm depth, driven by organic matter degradation and bacterial sulfate reduction. These processes release mobile elements like nitrate, phosphate, and dissolved organic carbon (DOC), while authigenic iron sulfides and manganese carbonates form. The findings provide insights into diagenetic processes across the Eurasian continent.
