Summary

Taxila, often mythologized as the site of the world's first university, lacks concrete historical evidence to support such claims. While references to Taxila as a prestigious educational institution persist in Buddhist narratives and Hindu literature, archaeological excavations during the British era revealed no traces of a Buddhist or Vedic-era university. This study dispels misconceptions by highlighting how nationalist narratives, particularly those influenced by Hindutva, have reshaped the historical perception of Taxila. It reveals that the tradition of formulating Vedic doctrine, which began post-Christ, continued until the 20th century, with Taxila playing a significant role in this continuum. The research approach involves a critical analysis of historical texts and archaeological findings to challenge prevailing myths.
