Summary

Bulgaria's biodiversity is among Europe's richest, with over 4,100 plant species and more than 33,500 animal species recorded since 2020. The country's strategic location between temperate and subtropical zones, along with its diverse topography, fosters high endemism—particularly in mountainous regions like Pirin (220 endemic species) and Rila (268). While molecular data remains limited, Bulgaria ranks among Europe's top countries for DNA barcoding, with over 36,000 sequences. Conservation efforts date back to the late 19th century, including early legislation and national strategies aligned with the Convention on Biological Diversity. However, biodiversity faces significant threats from habitat loss, pollution, invasive species, and climate change, driven by agricultural practices and land abandonment.
