Summary

Seven villages with fortified churches in Transylvania, Romania, represent the most significant rural heritage of the country. Despite their cultural importance, only these seven were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List: Prejmier-Tartlau, Biertan, Valea Viilor, Calnic, Saschiz-Keisd, Darju, and Viscri. This study highlights the pivotal role of public participation in preservation and development projects within these villages, emphasizing its impact on sustainable heritage management. It also examines broader challenges, such as the effects of tourism on local communities, offering insights into balancing conservation with socio-economic development.
