Summary
Public spaces within UNESCO World Heritage Sites, such as the Historic Centre of Oaxaca and Monte Albán, undergo transformations driven by tourism, commerce, and public policy, often at the expense of their cultural significance. This study reveals that while these changes respond to community needs, they also introduce challenges like spatial fragmentation, social exclusion, and altered socio-spatial relations. Using the Zócalo in Oaxaca as a case study, the research highlights how such spaces evolve over time while remaining central to local identity and tourism appeal. The analysis draws from multiple investigations to propose potential lines of inquiry for future monitoring.
