Summary

A breeding colony of the subtropical lizard Japalura polygonata, native to the Amami and Okinawa Groups of the Central Ryukyus, has established on Yakushima Island, a UNESCO Natural World Heritage site. This discovery expands the species' known range beyond Kyushu, where it was previously reported as introduced. Researchers confirmed reproduction through morphological examination, identifying shelled eggs in females and hatchlings among collected specimens. The lizards were found in secondary forests with primary components, suggesting adaptability to disturbed habitats. The study highlights the ecological risks posed by invasive species to fragile island ecosystems.
