Summary
A new chronological framework for pre-Hispanic occupations in the central sector of Quebrada de Humahuaca, Argentina, reveals complex patterns of change and continuity among local populations, including the presence of extralocal groups. By compiling all existing radiocarbon dates and analyzing architectural, settlement, and ceramic contexts, researchers identified five distinct periods that challenge traditional assumptions about temporal succession. Bayesian statistical modeling highlighted instances of contemporaneity between previously sequential phenomena, suggesting a more dynamic interaction between regional and external influences. This study provides a flexible, data-driven schema for future research rather than a definitive model.
