Summary

A rare insight into the 10th-century episcopal translation controversy reveals how Rather of Verona leveraged Pseudo-Isidorian forgeries to justify his move from Verona to Liège, despite canonical prohibitions. This study demonstrates that the affair marked a pivotal moment in the dissemination of Pseudo-Isidorian norms regarding episcopal mobility, influencing later revolutionary attitudes toward bishops' transfers. By analyzing Rather's defense and the broader application of these norms, the research highlights how political backing, such as Otto I's support, ultimately failed to sustain his career amidst shifting ecclesiastical dynamics.
