Summary
The transition from encomiendas (land grants) to haciendas (estates) in the 19th century shaped the cultural landscape and economic foundation of Viotá, Cundinamarca, Colombia. This study reveals how these coffee plantations became pivotal in consolidating territorial order, driving regional economic growth, and attracting population migration. The research traces this historical evolution through an analysis of the paisaje cultural (cultural landscape) of Viotá, highlighting its role as a key driver of municipal development. Methodologically, it combines archival records with spatial analysis to demonstrate how encomiendas were repurposed into specialized coffee haciendas, solidifying their legacy in Colombia's UNESCO-listed Coffee Cultural Landscape.
